Nepeta cataria, commonly known as catnip, catwort and catmint is a species of Nepeta, short lived perennial herbaceous plant that blooms from late spring through autumn. Catnip contains the feline attractant nepetalactone which is known for its behavioural effects on the cat family. With domestic cats, catnip is used as a cat ‘enjoyment'. Common behaviours cats display when they sense catnip is rubbing on the toys, rolling on the ground, pawing at it, licking it, and chewing it. Catnip is an extremely safe herb for cats and humans. Cats are predatory by nature, so they can attack our toys with a good bit of enthusiasm. To make sure that your cats gets the best reaction to catnip it is important that you don’t store your catnip in freezer. While it might preserve the freshness of other herbs, the cold breaks down the oils containing nepetalactone.
